Typically, IO-Link would be implemented by combining a simple microcontroller with up to 60 additional discrete components that comprise the line driver, or PHY, stage of IO-Link. A software protocol stack is also needed for the microcontroller.
Sensors, in particular are getting smaller and smaller and the typical solution is becoming unfeasible. The Renesas Electronics solution integrates the power of all these components into a small single chip solution. Developers need only use a single low power high performance IO-Link device to empower their products with this versatile digital communications standard. In addition all the firmware is also included, so software developers need not completely understand the implementation details of the IO-Link protocol, and instead can concentrate on the application at hand.
Application development is supported by a dedicated IO-Link development kit and class leading soft- and hardware tools.
