The system provides access control on PCs and control units. EKS is used on machines as password replacement, to track the history of process changes and for quality control applications. EKS provides security in all areas where critical processes have to be controlled. By comparison to the issue of a password, considerably more responsibility is assigned to the owner of an Electronic-Key. This provides protection against unauthorized access. Due to its robust construction, EKS is considered as one of the few RFID access control systems which are really suitable for harsh industrial environment.

In principle EKS comprises two components: an Electronic-Key and the matching key adapter. Integrated into the Electronic-Key, in the form of a robust tag, are a memory chip and an antenna (transponder). This is in fact an inductive identification system featuring transponders without battery.

 

In operation the Electronic-Key is inserted into the Electronic-Key adapter and is held in place by a spring clip. The data are transferred between the Electronic-Key adapter and the Electronic-Key without using any contacts. The Electronic-Keys are available in different colours. The colours can be used, for example, to indicate the different levels of access rights. In principle, the key adapter is a read/write system. The data carrier in the Electronic-Key has a programmable memory capacity of 116 bytes (E²PROM) plus an additional serial number of 8 bytes (ROM). The PROFINET variant is used as a matter of preference to interface with controls. Especially in this variant, the EKS can be used remotely from the control system, e. g. at assembly workplaces. Setting up the data transfer and system integration is easy. The system is connected to the control via standard Ethernet connecting cable. The DCP-Name is simply assigned via configuration software, DIP switch or web-browser and the GSDML file is loaded into the control. Then the data are cyclically transferred into the control.

Version FSA

As a variant, the Electronic-Key adapter with PROFINET interface is available in the FSA (For Safety Applications) version. To solve the widespread problem of tampering with safety guards, EKS has been expanded for safety related applications in conjunction with operating mode selection. In this case trained personnel are specifically authorized to perform critical setup and maintenance work in a special, hazardous operating mode. This version has additional switched outputs that can be utilized to form a safe shut-down signal. In this case, a safe evaluation device must be connected downstream. This means that the EKS FSA can be used for safety-relevant applications. The machine is reset to a safe operating mode by removing the Electronic-Key.
